I grew up surrounded by artists – an upholsterer, turned Sunday painter; a contractor whose nights reveal the most sensitive pen; a tech consultant spending his days in front of a screen, dreaming of singing on stage; a nurse dabbling in all form of arts, devoting her time to the residents of a care home… Their stubbornness in remaining amateur artists in a world that would rather see them make profits from it has shown me the inherent value of creation, that which emerges from process, rather than result.
Sexuality is at the heart of all human experience. Language makes it omnipresent; existing off-kilter from its straightest expressions makes it inevitable. To be concerned with desire and its disorientations is therefore a door to the complexity of our lived experiences, in relation to the discourses that influence them.
Cinema offers me a multidisciplinary medium to explore our relationships to sexuality. Often auto ethnographic, my practice combines performance, poetry, archives, and research to queer the filmmaking process.
I firmly believe in the importance of process. Cinema is anchored economically in a preoccupation for its results. This leaves little space for its participants to develop a real knowledge of themselves, the very self-knowledge which animates the amateur artists mentioned above. To center process therefore means democratizing creation, while allowing the convergence of our lived experiences.

Filémon Brault-Archambeault is a multidisciplinary artist based in Tiothia:ke/Montréal. Their work has been presented at festivals worldwide, notably Images, Tous Courts & FIFA. They are currently studying cinema and sexuality at Concordia University.

J’ai grandi entouré.e d’artistes - un rembourreur, peintre du dimanche ; un contracteur dont les nuits révèlent une plume des plus sensibles ; un consultant informatique qui, rêvant d’être chansonnier, passe ses journées devant l’écran ; une infirmière touche-à-tout, dévouant son temps aux résidents d’un CHSLD… Leur entêtement à demeurer des artistes amateurs dans un monde qui préférerait les voir en tirer profit m’a montré la valeur intrinsèque de la création, celle qui émerge du processus, et non pas du résultat.
La sexualité est au cœur de toute expérience humaine. Le langage la rend omniprésente ; exister en décalage par rapport à ses expressions les plus droites la rend inévitable. S’intéresser au désir et à ses désorientations, c’est donc une porte d’entrée vers la complexité de nos expériences humaines, en relation aux discours qui les influencent.
Le cinéma m’offre un médium multidisciplinaire à travers lequel explorer nos rapports à la sexualité. Souvent auto-ethnographique, ma pratique allie la performance, la poésie, les archives et la recherche pour créer un processus cinématographique queer.
Je crois fermement en l’importance du processus. Le cinéma est ancré économiquement dans une préoccupation par ses résultats. Ceux-ci laissent peu de place à ses participants pour développer une véritable connaissance de soi, celle-là même qui anime les artistes amateur.es mentionné.es plus haut. Centrer le processus, c’est donc démocratiser la création, tout en permettant la convergence de nos expériences individuelles.
